History of Plant Medicine

“There is virtually no people known to anthropology – however remote, isolated, or primitive – in which some form of doctoring with plants was not practiced.”
Barbara Griggs, The Green Pharmacy

Early civilizations learned about the healing properties of plants from observation, intuition, and the oral transmission of experience and knowledge.

Aromatic plants in the form of oils, ointments, teas, poultices were central to healing practices worldwide; Known written records about medicinal plants date back to 5000 years and are evidenced in books we still reference today.

What is Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is the holistic and therapeutic practice of using genuine and authentic essential oils to support, balance and harmonize the wellbeing of our mind, body and spirit.

What are essential oils?

Essential oils are aromatic substances that are extracted from different plant materials like seeds, roots, flowers, leaves, citrus peels, wood, needles, cones and resins. They are packed with a dynamic collection of aromatic molecules that can have an extraordinary effect on our wellbeing.  The different ways in which we use essential oils, like applying them to our skin and also just by smelling them, is called “Aromatherapy.”

Where do essential oils come from?

All plants that go through the process of photosynthesis to manufacture molecules that bond together to form these potent aromatic compounds, and the plant goes through this extra effort to create them in order to protect and sustain its life. Every time a leaf transforms the sunlight into food, and expels oxygen into the atmosphere, a new aromatic chemical compound is synthesized.
